Multi Grain Hot Breakfast Cereal


  • ¼ cup pearl barley
  • ¼ cup steel cut oats
  • ¼ cup bulgur wheat
  • ¼ cup quinoa
  • 4 cups water
  • ¾ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ¼  tsp. vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg


  1. Preheat an oven to 325°F.
  2. In a large casserole dish (2 1/2 quart), combine all the grains and spices. Add the water, then stir in the applesauce.
  3. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the oven for 90 minutes. Remove the dish from the oven and let cool. There will still be a lot of water, but that will be absorbed during the cooling process.
  4. Refrigerate and reheat as needed for your desired servings. You throw in a scoop of protein powder or can top the cereal with dried fruits, fresh fruits, and/or nuts as desired for additional nutrient fortification.

Makes about 5 servings (1 cup)
